Call me silly—better yet, naïve—but only a good year after Iguana Books published Becoming Janice did it occur to me that their global supplier—Ingram Distribution Services—also supplies my local market. Duh! And how did I achieve this earth-shattering insight?
The answer is ABC… because on May 2, 2025 (or 5-2-25—don’t you just love it when numbers do that) the American Book Center informed me that my book is available to order on their website, by phone or in any one of their bookstores. One happy bunny am I to know that!
Well my dears, that got me thinking (at last!) so I ran a check on bookstores in the Netherlands to learn where local readers (i.e., YOU) can find Janice and—drum roll please, Maestro—here are the Dutch results.
ABC: paperback
Indie bookshop, ABC aka the American Book Center was established in 1972 and offers a tremendous range of English-language titles in their stores in the heart of Amsterdam, The Hague and Leideschendam.
Amazon.nl: Kindle & paperback
Say no more… except 80% of the reviews on Amazon are 5-star, with one 4-star review.
Athenaeum | Scheltema: paperback
This cooperative combines the stock of six revered bookshops that together are more than 400 years old: Boekhandel Scheltema (1853), Boekhandel Van Rossum (1929), Athenaeum Boekhandel (1966), Boekhandel het Martyrium (1982) (my favorite when I lived in Amsterdam), Athenaeum Boekhandel Haarlem (1988) and Athenaeum Boekhandel Zuidoost (2022).
Bol.com: Adobe ePub and paperback
The biggest webshop in the Netherlands serving some 11 million active customers, Bol.com offers over 23 million items in a vast array of product categories, including Becoming Janice in books (ha!).
Bruna.nl: paperback
Besides books, Bruna sells magazines, newspapers, paper and stationery, greeting cards, gift and multimedia products. Nowadays Bruna has some 300 bookstores (mainly franchises) dotted across the Dutch landscape. Fascinating factoid. Originally a publishing house, the chain was founded in 1868 by the father of children’s book author/illustrator Dick Bruna. In Dutch, Dick Bruna’s famous Bunny is called Nijntje but you may know her as Miffy.
Libris.nl: paperback
Libris.nl is the online webstore of over 230 independent Libris and Blz. bookstores that are working together to compete with the chains. Libris and Blz. have a joint market share of over 20%, making them the leaders in the general book market. LibrisBlz. members include select Primera bookstores too, including Primera De Gele Klap in Bedum, quite near where I live.
Van der Velde: paperback
Another bookstore even closer to my home village is Van der Velde on the Grote Markt (main square) of Groningen. Their English is good, so even if you don’t speak Dutch, don’t hesitate to ask for Janice.
Walter’s Bookshop: paperback in stock
This independent international bookshop in Groningen is just around the corner of the main University building & library. Walter’s kindly let me do a book reading & signing session which went down very well… the stock sold out.
Groningen Public Library: paperback in stock
My book is a contender in the New Writing Talent competition for 2025 run by the Groningen Library in the famous Forum building. Local readers, please borrow Janice, leave a review and you’ll help her win. Thanks!
Autographed copy: in stock
Hot news! You can also get Becoming Janice from the author (ahem). Published in Canada, the paperback is printed in the US, the UK and Australia. If you live outside these countries, delivery often takes weeks. When you buy from me, delivery only takes 1-2 days for orders inside NL/Europe, a bit longer for orders outside Europe. Besides that, I’ll sign your copy (but only if you insist). Order your copy here.
And of course, if you don’t happen to live in or near the Netherlands, Janice is available in an (online) bookstore near you…. See for yourself!
